Description

FOKCON1HELP reports the degree of help that the respondent received from using folk medicine to treat the most important health condition for which it was used. Please see the Comparability, Universe and Survey Text tabs for more information on changes in the variable over time.

Comparability

Prior to 2012, in universe persons were asked about a series of questions about specific health problems, symptoms, or conditions they may have treated with different complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) therapies.

Beginning in 2012, in universe persons were asked to select three of sixteen therapies that were most important and only asked the series of questions related to treating health problems, symptoms, or conditions about these top three therapies. Unlike other CAM variables created through special programming in 2012, FOKCON1HELP excludes persons who did not report folk medicine among their top three CAM therapies. Persons who wish to include these cases in the universe for FOKCON1HELP, may identify such persons by using the variables CAMTHER1, CAMTHER2, and CAMTHER3, which report the person's top three CAM therapies.

Changes in universe also pose comparability challenges; in 2002, only sample adults were included in the universe. Beginning in 2012, however, sample adults and sample children are included in the universe.

Universe

  • 2002: Sample adults age 18 who have seen a practitioner for folk medicine during the past 12 months and have used folk medicine for a specific health problem or condition, and the health problem or condition specified was listed first as one of the three most bothersome health problems or conditions.
  • 2012: Sample adults age 18+ and sample children ages 4-17 who have reported having at least one top CAM therapy and using this therapy to treat a specific health problem or condition.
