Description

For all sample adults who have felt off-balance or unsteady AND had fallen during the past 5 years, FELARDIZZY indicates if any of the falls occurred just before or around the time the person was having a general feeling of being unsteady or off-balance. A fall was defined as "unexpectedly dropping to the floor or ground from a standing, walking or bending position."

This variable was part of the Sample Adult Balance Supplement, sponsored by the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders.

Comparability

This variable is comparable over time.

Universe

  • 1984: Sample persons age 55+ who did not say that they had not fallen in the past 12 months.
  • 2016: Sample adults age 18+ who have had felt off-balance or unsteady and have fallen during the past 5 years.
