Description

For sample adults and sample children, FAMSIZECAT is an IPUMS recoded variable that reports the number of persons in a family grouped into categories. Beginning in 2019, NCHS has been top-coding both the number of adults (NUMADULTS) and the number of children (FAMKIDNO) in the family.

To account for the top-codes in both the number of adults and children in the family, IPUMS NHIS uses a composite coding system for the FAMSIZECAT variable. The first digit indicates the number of adults in the family and the second digit indicates the number of children in the family. For example, a family with 1 adult and 3+ children would have a code of 13. A family with 2 adults and 2 children would have a code of 22.

Prior to 2019, the variable FAMSIZE reports family size without top-codes.
