Description

For sample persons in age 55 years and older who did not use a proxy respondent in 1984, and sample persons age 18 years and over in 1985 and 1990, EXREG indicates if the sample person follows a regular routine of physical exercise.

The field representative's manual in 1984 defines exercise as "physical activity which the person consciously performs for the sake of his/her well being. The exercise does not have to be part of a formal program or prescribed activity. Include any kind of exercise, such as walking, physical fitness programs, sports, etc." and defines regular routine as "physical exercise performed on a recurring basis at fairly even intervals, consisting of some set type of physical activity. Examples are golfing every Thursday, walking around the block twice daily, or any other activity performed routinely for exercise". The field representative's manual in 1985 and 1990 states regular exercise and sports are respondent defined terms.
