Codes and Frequencies
Description
For sample persons in 1991 whose last routine check-up was less than 1 year ago (PHYSICALYRS) and whose doctor or other health professional recommended beginning or continuing swimming (EXDSW), EXDSWMTL indicates whether respondents were advised to check how hard they should exercise by employing the talk test--exercising to the level that talking is difficult.
Related Swimming Variables
Sample adults who were told to do swimming were also asked the recommended frequency and duration of each session swimming, as well as what method they were advised to use to check how hard they should exercise.
Responses to these follow-up questions can be found in the following variables:
- EXDSWMIN (minutes each session doctor told to do swimming)
- EXDSWWK (times per week doctor told to do swimming)
- EXDSWMHR (doctor recommended method of checking swimming: heart rate)
- EXDSWMSW (doctor recommended method of checking swimming: sweating)
- EXDSWMBR (doctor recommended method of checking swimming: breathing)
- EXDSWMSP (doctor recommended method of checking swimming: distance or speed)
- EXDSWMOTH (doctor recommended method of checking swimming: other)
- EXDSWMNO (doctor recommended method of checking swimming: none)
Sample adults were also asked whether they were advised by their doctor or other health professional to do other physical activities. Along with reporting swimming, respondents could say they were advised to do any of 8 other physical activities (including one residual "other" category). For more information on the variables related to these other activities, see EXDOCREC.
