Description

For sample persons in 1991 whose last routine check-up was less than 1 year ago (PHYSICALYRS) and whose doctor or other health professional recommended beginning or continuing bicycling(EXDBI), EXDBIMNO indicates whether respondents were given any recommendation by their doctor or other health professional regarding what method to use to check how hard they should exercise.

Related Bicycling Variables

Sample adults who were told to do bicycling were also asked the recommended frequency and duration of each session bicycling, as well as what method they were advised to use to check how hard they should exercise.

Responses to these follow-up questions can be found in the following variables:

  • EXDBIMIN (minutes each session doctor told to do bicycling)
  • EXDBIWK (times per week doctor told to do bicycling)
  • EXDBIMHR (doctor recommended method of checking bicycling: heart rate)
  • EXDBIMBR (doctor recommended method of checking bicycling: breathing)
  • EXDBIMSW (doctor recommended method of checking bicycling: sweating)
  • EXDBIMTL (doctor recommended method of checking bicycling: talking)
  • EXDBIMSP (doctor recommended method of checking bicycling: distance or speed)
  • EXDBIMOTH (doctor recommended method of checking bicycling: other)

Other Related Physical Activity Variables

Sample adults were also asked whether they were advised by their doctor or other health professional to do other physical activities. Along with reporting bicycling, respondents could say they were advised to do any of 8 other physical activities (including one residual "other" category). For more information on the variables related to these other activities, see EXDOCREC.
