Description

For female sample adults aged 40 and older in 1987 and, female sample adults aged 18 and older in 1999, ESTROGEV reports if the person has ever taken estrogen pills for any reason. Please refer to the universe tab for more detailed information on the universe of this variable.

Before asking the question, the interviewers explained to respondents that estrogen is a female hormone that may be taken after a hysterectomy or during or after menopause.

Comparability

Changes in the universe may affect the comparability of this variable. As always, data users should use the prescribed IPUMS NHIS weights.

Universe

  • 1987: Half of female sample persons age 40+ (excluded from CACT).
  • 1999: Female sample adults age 18-39 who were not currently pregnant or for whom it was unknown if they were pregnant and who had a menstrual period in the past 3 months that was less regular or lighter compared with 12 months ago AND female sample adults age 40-49 who are not pregnant or for whom it was unknown if they were pregnant AND female sample adults age 50+.
