Description

For female sample persons aged 40 and older in 1987 who have ever taken estrogen pills and female sample persons aged 18 and older who have ever taken estrogen in 1999, ESTROAGE reports the age in which the person started taking estrogen. Please refer to the universe tab for more detailed information on the universe of this variable.

Comparability

Changes in the universe may affect the comparability of this variable over time. As always, data users should use the prescribed IPUMS NHIS weights.

Universe

  • 1987: Half of female sample persons age 40+ (excluded from CACT) who have ever taken estrogen pills.
  • 1999: Female sample adults who have ever taken estrogen AND who were age 18-39, not currently pregnant or unknown if pregnant, and had a menstrual period in the past 3 months that was less regular or lighter compared with 12 months ago OR who were age 40-49 and not pregnant or unknown if pregnant OR who were age 50+.
