Codes and Frequencies
Description
For sample adults who have ever been told by a doctor or other health professional that they have a seizure disorder or epilepsy (EPILEPSYEV), EPILSEIZNOYR reports the number of seizures the person had in the past 12 months in grouped categories.
For a list of related variables and more information on epilepsy, see EPILEPSYEV.
Comparability
The grouped categories for the number of seizures changed between 2017 and 2021. In 2017 and earlier years, categories respondents reported on were the following: 1, 2 or 3 seizures in the past year; 4 to 10 seizures in the past year; more than 10 seizures in the past year. In 2021, categories respondents reported on included the following: 1, 2 or 3 seizures in the past year; 4 or more seizures in the past year. IPUMS NHIS has introduced composite coding to allow for the comparability of responses over time.
Comparability may be further affected by the 2019 questionnaire redesign. The NHIS questionnaire was substantially redesigned in 2019 to introduce a different data collection structure and new content. For more information on changes in terminology, universes, and data collection methods beginning in 2019, please see the user note.
