Description
For half of sample persons age 40 and over who have heard of and had a digital rectal exam, DRXMO is a recoded variable reporting the time since the person's last digital rectal exam in months. For persons whose exact duration is unknown but an estimated duration is available, grouped months or years are provided.
Comparability
Changes in response types reduce comparability between samples. Responses from 1987 are reported in calendar months, while responses from 1992 are reported in century months. Response categories changed between samples, but can be recoded by data users to produce comparable categories. Changes in survey design (e.g. sampling quarters) affect raw frequencies, but do not affect comparability of the variable. As always, data users should use the prescribed IPUMS NHIS weights.
