Codes and Frequencies
For sample persons ages 40 and over who have heard of a digital rectal exam and who have had a digital rectal exam in the past three years because of a health problem, DRXLYOTH reports if the health problem was something other than bleeding, blood in the stool, bowel trouble, constipation, diverticulitis, hemorrhoids, pain, prostate enlargement, difficulty urinating, or (in 1987 only) an unrelated medical problem.
Aside from a change in health problems persons could choose from and a slight change in universe, there are no comparability issues with this variable. Changes in survey design (e.g., quarters in which the supplement was collected) may affect raw frequencies, but do not affect comparability of the variable. As always, data users should use the prescribed IPUMS NHIS weights.
