Description

For sample adults in 2002 and 2007, DITVEGEV reports whether the person had ever used a vegetarian diet for two weeks or more for health reasons. Those who answered affirmatively were asked whether they had used a vegetarian diet in the past 12 months (DITVEGYR). In 2007, the question for DITVEGYR was also asked for sample children.

DITVEGEV is part of a series of variables from the 2002 and 2007 supplements on Complementary and Alternative Medicine. In those years, respondents were asked about their use of special diets and 15 other modalities of alternative medicine. For more information about the Alternative Health supplements, see ACUYR. For more information about the full range of variables related to the use of special diets-- including the Atkins, macrobiotic, Ornish, Pritikin, South Beach, vegetarian, and Zone diets--see DITATKINYR.

Comparability

DITVEGEV is comparable across time. In 2007, field representatives were instructed to "include vegan" as a vegetarian diet.
