Description

DIETWRIT reports whether the diabetic (or, in 1976, pre-diabetic) person has ever been given a diet or instructions on what to eat for his or her diabetes or pre-diabetic condition. Please see Comparability and Universe tabs for information on question wording and universe between samples.

This variable is included in the 1976 and 1989 Diabetes supplements. For related variables, please use the IPUMS NHIS search function and drop-down menus.

Comparability

Changes in question wording and universe somewhat restrict comparability between samples.

In 1976, all persons with diabetes or a pre-diabetic condition were asked if they "have... EVER been given a WRITTEN diet" for their condition.

In 1989, only adults with confirmed diabetes (not pre-diabetes) were asked if "a doctor or other health professional [has] ever given you a diet or instructions on what foods you should eat as a diabetic." The question did not specify whether the instruction was written.

Universe

  • 1976: All persons who have ever had diabetes or a pre-diabetic condition.
  • 1989: Persons age 18+ with confirmed diabetes.
