Description
For sample persons age 18 and over, DIABETICNOW identifies those respondents who had diabetes or sugar diabetes at the time of the interview. Definitions of these terms were not provided to respondents and the conditions did not have to be diagnosed by a health professional.
Both the 1985 and 1990 Field Representative's Manuals instructed interviewers to first re-ask the question if the initial response was some other form of diabetes, such as "border-line" diabetes, then record "Other" if the respondent still did not report diabetes or sugar diabetes.
In 1989, persons were only included in the universe if they confirmed that they had ever been told by a doctor that they have diabetes (DIABETICEV = 2). However, 109 persons who reported having been told by a doctor that they have diabetes in DIABETICEV are not included in the universe for this variable because they reported elsewhere that they do not have diabetes now, or they have pre-, potential, or borderline diabetes (DIABETICAGE = 93 or 94).
