For sample adults age 18 and older, DEMENTIAEV reports responses to the question, "Have you ever been told by a doctor or other health professional that you had ... Dementia, including Alzheimer's disease?"

The 2019 Field Representative's Manual defines Dementia as "the loss of cognitive functioning - thinking, remembering, and reasoning - and behavioral abilities to such an extent that it interferes with a person's daily life and activities."

Comparability

Questionnaire design changes introduced in 2019 limit comparability with earlier years. The NHIS questionnaire was substantially redesigned in 2019 to introduce a different data collection structure and new content.
