DADPNUM
Person number of father (reported)

Codes

This is a 2-digit numeric variable.

Description

For all persons whose father is present in the household, DADPNUM reports the person number of the person's father. This variable corresponds with original NHIS person number PX. In some cases, this may differ from the IPUMS NHIS-generated variable PERNUM. Please see the comparability tab for more information.

Users may be interested in using the IPUMS NHIS family interrelationship variables instead of DADPNUM. These variables allow users to identify a person's (probable) coresident spouse/partner and/or parent(s), and make it easy to include characteristics about these family members as new variables in their data extracts. When using the IPUMS family interrelationship variables, not only can users attach information about a parent's education (which is offered by NCHS through the IPUMS NHIS variable DADED), but can also attach other characteristics of interest, such as parent's race, labor force status, and health insurance coverage, as new variables. The IPUMS variable POPLOC reports the location number of the person's coresident father.

Comparability

In 1997, this question was only asked of sample children under age 18; beginning in 1998 it was asked of all persons whose father was present in the household. Otherwise there are no comparability issues.
