Description
For sample children ages 3 and over, CVSPECHDIF reports if the child had any speech problems that lasted one week or longer in the past 12 months. Speech problems include problems making speech sounds correctly or stuttering.
According to the Field Representative's Manual, speech disorders are any defect or abnormality that prevents an individual from communicating by means of spoken words. Speech disorders may develop from nerve injury to the brain, muscular paralysis, structural defects, hysteria, or intellectual disability, also known as mental retardation.
This variable is part of a series of variables on child communication disorders that constitutes the sample child Voice, Speech, Swallowing, and Language Supplement. Several variables in this supplement can be used to track the Healthy People 2020 Objectives, under the topic of Hearing and other Sensory and Communication Disorders.
Starting in 2022, this variable was combined with the sample adult version of this variable, VSLSWYR.
For more voice, swallowing, speech, and language communication disorder variables, please see VSLDIAG.
