Description
For sample children 3 and over who have been given a diagnosis for a voice, swallowing, speech, or language problem, CVLDIAGSPCH reports whether the child was given a diagnosis for a speech problem.
Persons who answered affirmatively were then asked for the diagnosis or reason given; persons could report multiple causes. The causes for the speech problems are reported in the following variables:
: hearing loss
: developmental speech sound disorder
: stuttering
:congenital malformation/birth defect
: genetic syndrome
: neurological disease
: head/neck injury
: cancer in head, neck or throat
: prescription medication
: something else
According to the Field Representative's Manual, speech disorders are "any defect or abnormality that prevents an individual from communicating by means of spoken words."
