Description
For sample adults and sample children who have received a COVID-19 vaccination (CVDSHT), CVDSHTNUM reports the number of COVID-19 vaccinations the respondent has received.
NCHS added nearly 30 questions related to COVID starting in quarter 3 of the 2020 NHIS questionnaire, eight of which are asked of both sample adults and sample children. For the full list of variables, as well as information about COVID-related changes to the NHIS, please see the user note.
Comparability
In 2022, this question was asked of individuals sample adults and sample children ages 5-17 and sample children ages 0-17 in August through December 2022. In 2021, this question was asked of sample adults interviewed in quarters 2-4 and sample children 12-17 interviewed in quarters 3 and 4.
In addition to changes in the universe, the response options have changed for this variable over time. In 2021, the maximum number of vaccinations an individual could report was 3 ("More than 2 vaccinations"). In 2022, this option changed to 4 ("4 or more vaccinations) and in 2023 this option again changed to 6 ("6 or more vaccinations").

- 2021: Sample adults interviewed in quarters 2-4 and sample children 12-17 interviewed in quarters 3 and 4 who have received a COVID-19 vaccination (CVDSHT).
- 2022: Sample adults and sample children 5-17 and sample children 0-17 interviewed August-December 2022 (INTERVWMO) who have received a COVID-19 vaccination (CVDSHT).
- 2023: Sample adults age 18+ and sample children age 0-17 who have received at least one COVID-19 vaccination (CVDSHT).
