Description
For all sample persons with symptoms lasting 3 months or longer that were not present prior to having COVID-19 (CVDLONG) and who are experiencing symptoms now (CVDSYMP), CVDLONGACT indicates how much these long-term symptoms reduce the respondent’s ability to carry out day-to-day activities compared to before they had COVID-19.
Long term symptoms include tiredness or fatigue, difficulty thinking, difficulty concentrating, forgetfulness or memory problems sometimes referred to as "brain fog," difficulty breathing or shortness of breath, joint or muscle pain, fast-beating or pounding heart (also known as heart palpitations), chest pain, dizziness on standing, menstrual changes (females aged 9-58), changes to taste/smell, inability to exercise, and mood changes.
In 2023, questions about Long COVID were sponsored by the CDC’s National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases (NCEZID). These questions allow researchers to study disparities by other variables already included on the NHIS (e.g., age, race/ethnicity, etc.). They also assist researchers in monitoring the prevalence of Long COVID in the population.
