Description
For sample adults age 18 and older who have ever quit smoking for one or more days, CSSTOPSICK indicates if, the last time the person stopped smoking, she/he did so because she/he was sick. Please see the Universe tab for detailed information about who was asked this question in specific survey years.
Comparability
There are minor changes in the universe statement between years, as outlined in the Universe tab, which impact the comparability of this variable over time. Users are advised to consider the impact that changes in the universe may have on their analyses when using data from multiple years.
Changes in survey design (e.g., quarters in which the supplement was collected) may affect raw frequencies, but do not affect comparability of the variable. As always, data users should use the prescribed IPUMS NHIS weights.
Universe
- 1991: Sample persons age 18+ who either smoked "every day" last year and currently do not smoke at all or who currently smoke every day AND who ever quit for one day or more.
- 1992: Half of sample persons age 18+ in quarters 1 and 2 and in 2 weeks of quarter 3 (excluded from CAEP supplement) who have smoked at least 100 cigarettes, smoke cigarettes now, smoke every day, and have ever stopped smoking for 1 day or more.
