Description
For sample adults age 18 and older, CSQPROGRAMEV indicates if the person used a stop-smoking clinic or program during her/his last attempt to stop smoking. Please see Comparability and Universe tabs for complete information on changes in universe between samples.
Comparability
In 1992, this question was asked of sample persons who have smoked at least 100 cigarettes, currently smoke every day, and have ever stopped smoking for at least 1 day for a reason other than sickness.
In 2000, this question was asked of sample person who have smoked at least 100 cigarettes, currently smoke or whose current smoking status is unknown, and who have tried to quit smoking for at least 1 day or for whom it is unknown if she/he ever tried to quit smoking for at least 1 day.
In 1992, this question was asked in Quarters 1, 2, and in 2 weeks of Quarter 3. Changes in survey design affect raw frequencies but do not affect comparability between samples. As always, data users should apply prescribed IPUMS NHIS weights. Aside from changes in the universe between years there are no comparability issues with this variable.
Universe
- 1992: Half of sample persons age 18+ in quarters 1 and 2, and in 2 weeks of quarter 3 (excluded from CAEP supplement) who have smoked at least 100 cigarettes, currenlty smoke every day, have ever stopped smoking 1+ day, and whose reason for stopping was not ONLY because of sickness.
- 2000: Sample adults age 18+ who have smoked at least 100 cigarettes, who currently smoke or whose current smoking status is unknown, and who have tried to quit smoking for 1+ day or whose ever quitting for a day status was unknown.
