Description

For sample adults age 18 and older, CSQCOUNSELYR indicates if the person used one-on-one counseling during her/his last attempt to quit smoking in the past 12 months. Please see Comparability and Universe tabs for complete information on changes in universe between samples.

Comparability

In 2005, this question was asked of sample adults who have smoked at least 100 cigarettes, are current smoker, and have tried to quit in the past 12 months.

In 2010 and 2015, this question was asked of sample adults who are current smokers and tried to quit in the last year, but was not restricted only to those who have smoked at least 100 cigarettes.

In 2022, this question was asked of sample adults 18 and older who tried to quit smoking in the past 12 months (CSSTOPEV).

The NHIS questionnaire was substantially redesigned in 2019 to introduce a different data collection structure and new content. For more information on changes in terminology, universes, and data collection methods beginning in 2019, please see the user note.

Universe

  • 2005: Sample adults age 18+ who smoked at least 100 cigarettes in their entire lives who are current smokers that tried to quit in the past 12 months.
  • 2010; 2015: Sample adults 18+ who are current smokers and tried to quit in the last year.
  • 2022: Sample adults 18+ who tried to quit smoking in the past 12 months (CSSTOPEV).
