Description

For sample persons age 18 and older who currently smoke or whose smoking status is unknown, and in 2000 who would like to quit or whose desire to quit is unknown, CSQ6MO indicates if respondents are seriously considering quitting smoking within 6 months. Please see Comparability and Universe tabs for complete details on changes in universe between samples.

Comparability

In 1992, this question was asked of sample adults who have smoked at least 100 cigarettes, either currently smoke every day or some days, and have smoked at least one day or an unknown number of days in the past 30 days. In 2000, this question was asked of sample adults who have ever smoked at least 100 cigarettes, currently smoke or current smoking status is unknown, and would like to quit completely or whose desire to quit is unknown. Aside from changes in the universe between years there are no comparability issues with this variable.

Universe

  • 1992: Half of sample persons age 18+ in quarters 1 and 2, and in 2 weeks of quarter 3 (excluded from CAEP supplement) who have smoked at least 100 cigarettes and either currently smoke everyday or currently smoke some days and have smoked at least one day or an unknown number of days in the past 30 days.
  • 2000: Sample adults age 18+ who have smoked at least 100 cigarettes, who either currently smoke or whose current smoking status is unknown, and who would either like to quit smoking completely or whose desire to quit smoking is unknown.
