Codes and Frequencies
Description
For sample persons age 18 and older who currently smoke and who plan to quit smoking in the next 6 months or, in 1992, whose quitting intentions are unknown, CSQ1MO indicates if respondents are planning to quit smoking within 30 days. Please see Comparability and Universe tabs for complete information on changes in universe between samples.
Comparability
In 1992, this question was asked of sample adults who have smoked at least 100 cigarettes, either currently smoke every day or some days, and have smoked at least one day or an unknown number of days in the past 30 days, and plan to quit smoking in the next 6 months or whose quitting intentions are unknown. In 2000, this question was asked of sample adults who have ever smoked at least 100 cigarettes, currently smoke or current smoking status is unknown, and would like to quit completely or whose desire to quit is unknown, and who plan to quit smoking in the next 6 months.
In 1992, this question was asked in Quarters 1, 2, and in 2 weeks of Quarter 3. Changes in survey design affect raw frequencies but do not affect comparability between samples. As always, data users should apply prescribed IPUMS NHIS weights. Aside from changes in the universe between years there are no comparability issues with this variable.
