For sample persons ages 18 and older, CSIGNCOUNT reports the total number of problems the person mentioned as warning signs or symptoms of cancer. The sample person was asked to select all issues she/he considered warning signs or symptoms of cancer from a list. Each individual item mentioned is recorded in a separate variable. CSIGNCOUNT is a count of the total number of items mentioned.

This variable is part of the attitudes and knowledge section of the Cancer Control
supplement introduced in the 1987 survey. For more information on the variables included in this section, please see CRSTRES, or use the IPUMS NHIS search function and drop-down menus.

Changes in survey design (e.g., quarters in which the supplement was collected) may affect raw frequencies, but do not affect comparability of the variable. As always, data users should use the prescribed IHIS weights.
