Description

For sample persons ages 18 and older, CRCOUNT reports the total number of factors the person mentioned that she/he believes are risk factors for cancer. The sample person was asked to select all factors she/he believed increase risk of cancer from a list. Each individual factor mentioned is recorded in a separate variable. CRCOUNT is a count of the total number of factors mentioned.

This variable is part of the attitudes and knowledge section of the Cancer Control
supplement introduced in the 1987 survey. For more information on the variables included in this section, please see CRSTRES, or use the IPUMS NHIS search function and drop-down menus.

Comparability

Changes in survey design (e.g., quarters in which the supplement was collected) may affect raw frequencies, but do not affect comparability of the variable. As always, data users should use the prescribed IHIS weights.
