Description

For sample persons ages 18 and older, CRCIG1O2 indicates whether the person indicated that, in her/his opinion, cigarette smoking is one of the top two factors responsible for most cases of cancer in the United States.

Sample persons who mentioned more than two factors that increase a person's chance of getting cancer in previous questions were asked to select which two factors she/he believes are responsible for MOST cases of cancer in the United States.

This variable is part of the attitudes and knowledge section of the Cancer Control supplement introduced in the 1987 survey. For more information on the variables included in this section, please see CRSTRES, or use the IPUMS NHIS search function and drop-down menus.

Comparability

Changes in survey design (e.g., quarters in which the supplement was collected) may affect raw frequencies, but do not affect comparability of the variable. As always, data users should use the prescribed IHIS weights.
