Description

For sample adults, COPDEV reports if the person has ever been told by a doctor or other health professional that they have Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), emphysema, or chronic bronchitis. Prior to 2019, the question only explicitly asked about COPD, but the Field Representative's Manuals defined Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) as "a group of diseases that cause airflow blockage and breathing-related problems. It includes emphysema, chronic bronchitis, and in some cases asthma".

Beginning with 2012, this question on Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) was sponsored by the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (NCCDPHP, CDC). Prior to 2019, it was a core question in Adult Conditions module and, beginning in 2019, it is part of the annual core for the Sample Adult interview. Before 2012, the NHIS collected data on chronic bronchitis and emphysema (items from which a measure of COPD can be developed), but did not address COPD directly.

A report on the cognitive evaluation of this item is available on the CDC's Q-Bank question evaluation website.

Comparability

Prior to 2019, COPDEV is comparable over time. The NHIS questionnaire was substantially redesigned in 2019 to introduce a different data collection structure and new content. For more information on changes in terminology, universes, and data collection methods beginning in 2019, please see the user note.
