Description

For sample adults in 2002 and 2012 who have seen a practitioner for chiropractic care during the past 12 months (COMYR), and for sample children between the ages of 4 and 17 in 2012, COMINSURE indicates whether any of the costs of using chiropractic care were covered by insurance.

Chiropractic care was one of many alternative health treatment modalities included in the Complementary and Alternative Health Supplements. Please use the IPUMS NHIS drop-down menus and search function to learn more about these variables.

Definitions

The 2002 Field Representative's Manual states that chiropractic care:

involves the adjustment of the spine and joints to influence the body's nervous system and natural defense mechanisms in order to alleviate pain and improve general health. It is primarily used to treat back problems, headaches, nerve inflammation, muscle spasms, and other injuries and traumas.

In 2012, the Field Representative's Manual instead refers specifically to chiropractic or osteopathic manipulation:

Chiropractic (kye-row-PRAK-tik) manipulation is a form of health care that focuses on the relationship between the body's structure, primarily of the spine, and function. Doctors of chiropractic, who are also called chiropractors or chiropractic physicians, use a type of hands-on therapy called manipulation (or adjustment) as their core clinical procedure.

Comparability

The type of alternative medicine referred to in COMINSURE changed across time.
In 2002, respondents were asked if they had seen a practitioner for "chiropractic care."
In 2012, respondents were asked if they had seen a practitioner specifically for "chiropractic or osteopathic manipulation." For the exact question wording, please refer to the "Survey Text" tab.
