Description

For sample adults aged 40 and older who ever had a colonoscopy or both a colonoscopy and sigmoidoscopy (COLSIGEV), COLLY reports the main reason that the respondent had their most recent colonoscopy. Prior to 2019, COLLY is asked of sample adults aged 40 and older who ever had colonoscopy only, as recorded in COLEV.

For more information, please see COLEV.

The 2010 and forward Field Representative's Manual advised:

For any of the questions that asks, "What is the main reason you had this exam?". . . if the respondent had a problem, but was not sure which reason to pick, then record the first one she gives, as her initial thought is probably the best option.

Comparability

Prior to 2019 there are no comparability issues. The NHIS questionnaire was substantially redesigned in 2019 to introduce a different data collection structure and new content. For more information on changes in terminology, universes, and data collection methods beginning in 2019, please see the user note
