Description

For sample adults who answered varied, never, or don't know to the number of cigarettes they smoked per day when they smoked regularly (CIGSDAYFS) or who do not currently smoke at all (SMOKFREQNOW) and used to smoke regularly (AGEFIRSTSMK), CIGSLONGFS reports the average number of cigarettes that respondent smoked per day during the longest period that they smoked.

Comparability

While the basic meaning of this variable is completely comparable over time, major questionnaire changes introduced in 2019 may affect comparability with earlier years. The NHIS questionnaire was substantially redesigned in 2019 to introduce a different data collection structure and new content. Universe

  • 2005; 2010; 2015: Sample adults 18+ who are former smokers and whose daily number of cigarettes smoked varied.
  • 2020: Sample adults age 18+ who answered varied, never, or don't know to number of cigarettes smoked per day when smoked regularly (CIGSDAYFS) or who do not currently smoke at all (SMOKFREQNOW) and used to smoke regularly (AGEFIRSTSMK).
