Description
For sample adults, and sample children ages 6-17 in 2012, CHOLHIGHYR indicates whether the person had high cholesterol during the past 12 months. In all years except for 2013, this question was asked only of those who were ever told they have high cholesterol (CHOLHIGHEV). Please see Comparability and Universe tabs for changes in the universe between samples.
Comparability
Changes in the universe affect comparability between samples. For 2002-2007 and 2014-forward, the question was only asked of sample adults who answered yes to a question about whether they had ever been told by a doctor or other health professional that they had high cholesterol (CHOLHIGHEV).
The NHIS questionnaire was substantially redesigned in 2019 to introduce a different data collection structure and new content. For more information on changes in terminology, universes, and data collection methods beginning in 2019, please see the user note.
