Description

CHOLCHEKYR reports the time, in years, since sample adults last had their blood cholesterol checked by doctor, nurse, or other health professional. The question was phrased as, "About how long has it been since you had your blood cholesterol checked by a doctor, nurse, or health professional?" Interviewers accepted and recorded responses phrased in terms of the number of days, weeks, months, or years since the last blood cholesterol check. The responses were converted into number of years since the last blood cholesterol check by the National Center for Health Statistics for the original NHIS public use data files.

In 2003, those who reported a duration (other than "never") since their last blood cholesterol check in CHOLCHEKYR were asked if they had ever been told by a doctor or other health professional that their blood cholesterol level was high (CHOLHIGHEV).

For more refined time periods, (CHOLCHEKNO) reports the number of (time) units used in combination with (CHOLCHEKTP), which reports the type of time unit (days, weeks, months, years), to ascertain the duration since sample adults last had their blood cholesterol checked by a doctor, nurse, or other health professional.

According to the Field Representative's Manual for 2003, the questions on blood cholesterol in the sample adult interview for that year were part of an inquiry into hypertension and were included for monitoring progress toward the Healthy People 2010 Objectives.
