Description

For sample adults, CHIPSMWK is a recoded variable that reports how many times per week the respondent consumed chips. This recoded variable is based on the responses to CHIPNO, which reports the frequency with which the respondent ate chips and CHIPTP, which reports the corresponding time unit.

CHIPSMWK is part of a series of variables initiated in 1987 related to food, food knowledge, and cancer. For related variables, please use the IPUMS NHIS search function and drop-down menus.

Comparability

Prior to 2000, respondents were asked how often they consumed salty snacks like chips or popcorn. The field representative's manual in 1992 specifies that this applies equally to corn chips, potato chips, and pretzels. In 2000, the survey question is exclusively about chips and specifies that this includes regular fat potato chips, tortilla chips, and corn chips. The 2000 survey specifies that non-fat baked chips are not to be included. Low or unsalted versions of these snacks are to be included.

Changes in survey design (e.g., quarters in which the supplement was collected) may affect raw frequencies, but do not affect comparability of the variable. As always, data users should use the prescribed IHIS weights.
