Description

For sample adults age 18 and over, CHEWSTATUS2 provides recoded responses as to if the respondent used chewing tobacco now and used it more than 20 times, formerly used it and used it more than 20 times, or never used it more than 20. The term "chewing tobacco" was respondent defined.

 

The Field Representative's Manual for 1994 mention that using chewing tobacco includes chewing the tobacco or just placing it in the mouth.

Comparability

This variable is only available for 1994.

Universe

  • 1994: Half of sample adults age 18+ (excluded from AIDS supplement) who have ever used chewing tobacco at least 20 times.
