Description

For sample adults age 18, this is a recoded variable indicating if the respondent now uses, formerly used or never used chewing tobacco. The recoded response is provided from answers to questions on if the respondent ever chewed tobacco, ever used it at least 20 times, and if they used it at the time of the survey.

The term "chewing tobacco" was respondent defined. The Field Representative's Manuals for 1992 and 1994 mention that using chewing tobacco includes chewing the tobacco or just placing it in the mouth.
