Description
For sample adults age 18 and over who have ever used chewing tobacco at least 20 times in their entire life CHEWNO reports the number of units corresponding to the length of time the respondent used chewing tobacco. Responses were categorized into "less than one month," or the number of months or years.
[show more]The 1987 Field Representative's Manual instructed interviewers to probe to determine the best approximate values. For example, if the respondent reported, "on and off for 20 years," interviewers would probe to determine the total number of years, excluding the off periods. In 1992, the Manual instructed interviewers to record the verbatim response if the respondent reported a fraction.
The term "chewing tobacco" was respondent defined. The Field Representative's Manual for 1992 mentions that using chewing tobacco includes chewing the tobacco or just placing it in the mouth. This definition was not routinely shared with respondents.
This variable should be used with CHEWTP, the time period in months or years that the respondent chewed tobacco.
Universe
- 1987: Half of sample persons age 18+ (excluded from CAEP supplement) who ever used chewing tobacco at least 20 times.
- 1992: Half of sample persons age 18+ in quarters 1 and 2, and in 2 weeks of quarter 3 (excluded from CAEP supplement) who ever used chewing tobacco and have used chewing tobacco at least 20 times.
