Description

For sample adults age 18 and over who ever used chewing tobacco, this variable reports if the respondent used chewing tobacco every day, some days, or not at all.
The Field Representative's Manuals from 1998 forward mention that using chewing tobacco includes chewing the tobacco or just placing it in the mouth.

Comparability

This variable is completely comparable over time.

Universe

  • 1998: Sample adults age 18+ who ever used chewing tobacco at least 20 times, or for whom it was unknown whether they had ever used chewing tobacco at least 20 times.
  • 2000; 2005: Sample adults age 18+ who ever used chewing tobacco.
