Description

For sample persons ages 18 and older who have at least one biological child who has been diagnosed by a doctor with cancer and can report a valid cancer code for his or her first child with cancer, CH1CTYPE reports the first child's type of cancer based on International Classification of Diseases (ICD) code. Please use drop down menus for related variables.

NHIS released versions of this variable for up to five biological children who were ever diagnosed with cancer, but there were no in-universe responses for three, four, or five children with cancer. As such, these variables are not included in IPUMS NHIS.

Comparability

There are no comparability issues with this variable.

Universe

  • 1987: Half of sample persons age 18+ (excluded from CACT) who have at least 1 child (or an unknown number of children), for whom any children have been diagnosed with cancer, and whose first child reported as having known cancer has a valid cancer code.
