Description
For sample adults aged 18 and older, CFHEV reports whether the respondent ever had a biological parent, sister, brother, or child diagnosed with cancer, other than skin cancer.
In 2023, the NIH National Institutes for Health (NCI) and CDC National Center for Chronic Disease prevention and Health Promotion at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (NCCDPHP) sponsored family history of cancer questions. People with a family history of cancer may have an increased risk of developing cancer or an increased risk of having a pathogenic variant associated with a hereditary cancer syndrome.
The following variables related to family history of cancer were also introduced:
- Family ever had breast cancer (CFHBEV)
- Number of family members with breast cancer (CFHBNO)
- Number of family members with breast cancer before age 50 (CFHBNO50)
- Family ever had ovarian cancer (CFHOVEV)
- Number of family members with ovarian cancer (CFHOVNO)
- Talked to doctor about family risk of cancer (CFHRISK)
