Description
For sample adult females ages 30 and older, BXEV reports if the woman ever had a breast physical exam. Please see the universe tab for more information on changes to the universe prior to 2019.
For 1992 forward, the question included the criteria that the exam was done by a doctor or other health professional. Also for 1992 forward, interviewers mentioned to respondents that a physical breast exam was when a doctor or other health professional to checks for lumps (or other signs of breast cancer for 2000 forward).
Comparability
Changes in the universe (particularly with regard to age) and the questionnaire redesign introduced in 2019 limit comparability of samples. Analysts should review the universe tab for such changes across years. Additionally, the NHIS questionnaire was substantially redesigned in 2019 to introduce a different data collection structure and new content. For more information on changes in terminology, universes, and data collection methods beginning in 2019, please see the user note.
