Description

For sample children under 2 years of age, BPSCNWPPL reports if the sample child has a hard time being with new people.

BPSCNWPPL is part of the Baby Pediatric Symptom Checklist (BPSC). The BPSC is a 12-item validated screening tool that is part of the larger Survey of Well-being of Young Children. The BPSC was developed for use with children under the age of 18 months, but on the NHIS is asked of children under 2 years of age. More information on the BPSC can be found at https://www.tuftschildrenshospital.org/The-Survey-of-Wellbeing-of-Young-Children/Parts-of-the-SWYC.

Baby Pediatric Symptom Checklist Variables

In addition to BPSCNWPPL, other questions from the BPSC on the NHIS include:

  • Has a hard time with change (BPSCCHG)
  • Is hard to keep on a schedule or routine (BPSCSCHD)
  • Is hard to get enough sleep because of the sample child (BPSCPRLKSL)

Analyzing the BPSC

The BPSC consists of three subscales: inflexibility, irritability, and difficulty with routines and each response item can be assigned point values of 0 ("not at all"), 1 ("somewhat"), and 2 ("very much"). The codes assigned by IPUMS NHIS staff correspond to the point value for each response item. The 2019 Survey Description states, "As thresholds have not yet been developed to operationalize a categorical variable for the general population, no cut-off scores have been provided." For information on the development and validation of the BPSC, please see Development and Initial Validation of a New Social/Emotional Screening Instrument for Very Young Children.
