Codes and Frequencies
Description
For sample adults, BEEFSIZ reports the portion size (small, medium, or large) eaten each time the respondent ate beef, such as steaks or roasts. A medium-sized portion was defined as 4 ounces. Researchers may wish to use BEEFSIZ in conjunction with BEEFNO, which reports the frequency with which the respondent ate beef, and BEEFTP, which reports the corresponding time unit.
In 2010, the variable REDMEATMNO was introduced, which reports how many times the respondent ate red meat, such as beef, pork, ham, or sausage.
BEEFSIZ is part of a series of variables initiated in 1987 related to food, food knowledge, and cancer. For related variables, please use the IPUMS NHIS search function and drop-down menus.
