This variable reports if the respondent had asthma, emphysema, chronic bronchitis, or tuberculosis in past year. The 1995 Field Representative's Manual did not provide a definition for these conditions, and the question did not specify the condition had to be diagnosed by a doctor.

The Manual notes that this section was sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control, National Immunization Program included to provide data on people with high risk conditions "which may compromise the immune system [and] who should get influenza and/or pneumococcal
