Description

For sample persons age 18 and over, ALCNO2WK reports how many drinks the person had per day on the days in the past two weeks when the person drank alcoholic beverages. Responses were top-coded at 12 or more drinks per day. For all survey years, alcohol included beer, wine, and liquor.

ALCNO2WK was part of the Health Prevention and Disease Promotion Supplement periodically included in the NHIS, which helped measure national goals towards the Health People Initiative of the U.S. Surgeon General. Please use the IPUMS NHIS drop down menu and search functions for related variables.

Comparability

Universe

  • 1985; 1990: Sample persons age 18+ who ever drank 12 alcoholic drinks in entire life, ever drank 12 drinks in any 1 year, and had at least one alcoholic drink in the past year, and drank at least one day in the past 2 weeks or or for whom it was unknown the number of days drank in the past 2 weeks.
  • 1991: Sample persons age 18+ who have had at least one drink of alcohol in the past year and who drank at least one day in the past 2 weeks or for whom it was unknown the number of days drank in the past 2 weeks.
