Description

For sample adults 18+ who drank alcohol at least once in the past year, ALC5UPNO indicates the number of time units they had five or more alcoholic beverages (four or more for women beginning) in a single day. This variable should be used in conjunction with ALC5UPTP, which indicates the type of unit.

Comparability

Slight changes in the universe between 2003-2004 may compromise comparability over time. This variable is comparable from 2004 to 2013. Beginning in 2014, the number of drinks in one sitting is adjusted to five or more for men and four or more for women. This reduces the comparability with previous samples as women who had four drinks in a sitting would not have counted those occasions in previous samples.

Universe

  • 1997-2003: Sample adults age 18+ who drank in the past year, including those who didn't know how often.
  • 2004-2018: Sample adults age 18+ who drank at least once in the past year.
