Description

For sample adults aged 18-64 years who received an HPV shot (HPVACHAD), AHPV1STAGE reports the age at which the respondent received his or her first HPV shot (see also HPV1STAGE). In 2019, those who reported they received their first HPV shot under age 9 were coded to 96, "Under 9 years old," for confidentiality reasons because the recommended age to receive the first dose is 9 years old.

This variable was first introduced in the 2013 Adult Cancer Screening Supplement. In 2022, it was included in the Immunization section and sponsored by the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD).

Comparability

In 2022, age at which the respondent received their first HPV shot was asked of sample adults ages 18-64 and sample children ages 9-17. To increase comparability across time, IPUMS NHIS has recoded sample children ages 9-17 to "0 = Not in universe" for AHPV1STAGE. Please see HPV1STAGE for all respondents who were in universe for the age of first HPV shot.
