Description
For sample persons ages 18 and over who had abdominal pain 3 or more times in the past 12 months, and visited at least one doctor (or did not know the number of doctors visited) for this pain, ABPTESTLOEND reports whether the respondent ever had a lower endoscopy or colonoscopy to diagnose the condition causing abdominal pain identified in ABPSELCON. If the respondent appeared unsure or confused by the name of the test, the following description was given: "A long flexible tube with a light on the end is inserted in the rectum so that the lining of the large intestine can be examined." Other tests persons were asked about include upper GI series, upper endoscopy or gastroscopy, lower endoscopy or colonoscopy, and sonogram or ultrasound.

This supplement focuses on digestive conditions, primarily during the previous 12 months, to provide data for prevalence estimates on certain common digestive disorders and complaints. The Abdominal Pain section provides data to compare diagnosed and undiagnosed irritable bowel syndrome, and to describe pain accompanying this or other conditions that affect the abdomen.
