Description

For sample persons ages 18 and over who indicated that they had any type of pain or severe discomfort in their abdomen three or more times in the past 12 months (ABPAIN3XYR), ABPSAWDREV reports whether the respondent ever saw a doctor for the pain or the condition that caused the pain. See ABPAIN3XYR for a thorough description of how abdominal pain was defined. A similar variable, ABPSAWDRCON asks the same question of persons who did not report a non-digestive condition as the cause of their abdominal pain.

This variable is part of the Abdominal Pain section of the Digestive Disease Supplement, introduced in the 1989 survey. This supplement focuses on digestive conditions, primarily during the previous 12 months, to provide data for prevalence estimates on certain common digestive disorders and complaints. The Abdominal Pain section provides data to compare diagnosed and undiagnosed irritable bowel syndrome, and to describe pain accompanying this or other conditions that affect the abdomen.
